The Car Made Famous
What could collectibles have to do with Olyn?
Consider the DeLorean DMC-12 sports car, which graced the stage in the 1985-90 trilogy Back to the Future. This was a car produced with stainless steel body panels—the type that show fingerprints and rarely hold paint well. American consumers were initially displeased with the car, mainly because every car in the model looked the same and the consumers could not express their individuality. Even so, this is the car that soon became a “cult classic” among car collectors.
The car gained value when it appeared in the blockbuster film Back to the Future. On one level, it’s fantastic that entrepreneur John Zachary DeLorean witnessed his car revitalized by the film industry, and, on the other, it’s regrettable that DeLorean barely reaped the profits of his car’s fame. The car was out of production by 1983, which meant that the post-blockbuster resale of the DeLorean model never made it to Mr. DeLorean’s wallet. In fact, at acquittal from a crime associated with cocaine smuggling, the entrepreneur once famously asked a reporter who wanted to know if he would be returning to the car manufacturing industry if that reporter would buy a used car from him.
The question remains: Do people want to buy collectible items and items from famous and infamous individuals? The answer is yes, they do. Collectible items and regular items belonging to famous individuals can be exceptionally valuable. The comic called Fantastic Four No. 1 (1961) went at $1.5M in 2022. And in 2012, the auction of a pair of underwear accidentally left on a plane by Queen Elizabeth II went as high as $18,000.
The remarkable thing about selling used products is that they sometimes bring in hefty profits. At Olyn, we recognize a somewhat more remote use case for our product and wallet: people who want to prove the purchase history behind the products they own can easily do this in-app. In fact, collectors can probably trace ownership now better than ever before, which facilitates resale at higher prices. Every product’s “digital twin” or certificate of ownership will exist immutably on the blockchain.
All About Our Audiovisual Expert, Sebastian
He’s a film connoisseur and a prime example of a freelancer living the Barcelona life. Sebastian arrived in Spain some nineteen years ago from Romania. He acquired the language quickly and left his formal studies for the more self-starting lifestyle of a photographer. This photography expertise readily applied itself to cinematography, which Sebastian embraced as he continued to diversify his career options. From fashion to tech, Sebastian is deeply enmeshed in the visual.
As a true self-directed learner, Sebastian takes his inspiration and technical expertise from YouTube videos, blogs, and forums. Whether brushing up on Photoshop or exploring video editing further, Sebastian views his career as a learning process. At Olyn, Sebastian’s artistic expression is still evolving. He takes an interest in artificial intelligence solutions for video editing and compiling, which is fitting, given that Olyn is on the cutting edge of tech. This initial research into artificial intelligence is paving the way toward new content management possibilities, even if, as Sebastian explains, “we are still in the initial stages.”
“I like when new things come along,” he explains, “and it just makes sense to make use of all the tools out there that I can easily pick up.”
